Helpful Hints on How to Read to a Young Child

  1. Talk slowly and quietly.
  2. Be happy to see your reading partner. Mention your reading partner's name often. Remind your Reading Friend what your name is every session, as he/she may forget.
  3. Be excited about the book you are reading.
  4. Point to the pictures in the book and get your reading partner to discuss the pictures.
  5. Point to each word as you slowly and enthusiastically pronounce each word.
  6. Get sponsoring teacher to recommend several age-appropriate books. Get your reading partner involved by letting her/him choose the books or book to be reach at each session.
  7. Never discipline a child. Always ask sponsoring teacher for help and advice.
  8. Ask sponsoring teacher for helpful hints and advice on reading to your reading partner. They will be more than happy to help you. Keep a notebook of ideas you've received from sponsoring teacher.
  9. Be interested in everything your reading partner talks about, but do not get too personal. We are here to help by reading stories and books. We are not trained to help on personal or family problems. You should always report problems or alarming information to the teacher in charge.
  10. Obey all rules of sponsoring school. That includes gum, snacks, dress code, etc. We are guests of the sponsoring elementary school. We want to set the right kind of example for our reading partner.
  11. Keep a notebook with a list of the books and stories you and your reading partner have read together. Your reading partner will experience the achievement of you writing down new books that you have completed.
  12. Enjoy your time together. Have fun.
